At UNSW, we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, contractors, and visitors. 

Our security team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at Gate 2 on High Street. You can contact Security Operations at any time on 9385 6000, or in the event of an emergency on 9385 6666.

We offer a range of services including safety escorts, night shuttle bus, and help points located throughout the campus. Refer to our quick safety tips below:

Take extra precaution at night with these recommendations: 

  • Preference using University Walk as a route - it is patrolled by Campus Security Officers 
  • Report any lights which are not working to Security Operations on 9385 6000  
  • Use the free Night Shuttle Bus which runs Monday to Friday from 6:30pm to 11:30pm during term 
  • Request a Safety Escort to your car or other mode of transport, on or off campus, by calling UNSW Security Operations on 9385 6000 or by visiting one of the Help Points.

Report any suspicious behaviour or suspected criminal activity to UNSW Protective Services on 9385 6666.

Keeping you safe

Security Operations is on call to accompany you from your location on campus to car parks, bus stops or other locations on the Kensington Campus. This service is free and available 24/7, 365 days a year.

You can request a safety escort from:  

  • the Security Operations Control Room (call 9385 6000 or 1800 626 003)  
  • any lift phone  
  • any Help Point 

Security Operations aim to meet you as quickly as possible. Protective Services should be able to give you an approximate response time when you call. 

Security Operations provide a free night shuttle bus for staff and students from Monday to Friday, until 11:30 pm. You can request an escort:

  • From one location on Kensington Campus to another location on Kensington Campus.
  • Between Kensington, Randwick, or Paddington Campuses.
  • Or from Kensington Campus to a residence within a 2-kilometre radius of the Kensington Campus, as shown on the below map.

‘Help Points’ have been strategically placed across UNSW campuses to help ensure your safety. Help Points provide a direct link to the Security Operations control room. To activate a Help Point, hold your finger down on the red button until you are connected to Security Operations.

Protective Services staff provide 30-minute awareness presentations on safety and security to staff and students upon request. These talks are particularly helpful during induction, or orientation processes as they familiarise you and your teams with current safety protocols. Included in the presentation are helpful tips on staying safe from the local police command.  

Presentations provide information on:  

  • how to stay safe whilst on and off campus
  • how to get help during an emergency
  • support programs in place for victims of crime

How to be let in

Call Protective Services on 9385 6000 or visit the Gate 2 Security Office for assistance.

There is a $25 fee to be let in which you can pay online here.

Show Security your receipt when they arrive. 

Some pedestrian gates on campus are closed at night for safety reasons. Please note the following gate closing, and opening times if you are entering or exiting campus late at night.  

  • Oval Lane to Scientia - currently closed due to construction works
  • Oval Lane to Civil Engineering loading docks – open and closed daily by staff, Security will attend on request
  • Oval Lane to Valentine Annexe rear - closed nightly, from 10:00pm-5:00am 
  • Willis Lane to Barker car park - closed nightly, from 10:00pm-5:00am

UNSW Protective Services installs and maintains surveillance cameras across UNSW campuses, covering external grounds and internal areas of buildings. Surveillance cameras include closed-circuit television (CCTV) and license plate recognition (LPR) cameras.
