Site establishment
Early works commencing in October 2018 involves:
- Establishment of the site and installation of hoarding
- Demolition of 92 buildings and ancillary structures
- Removal of trees and vegetation
- Site remediation and removal of top soil
- Utility relocations and upgrade
- Set up of site and worker facilities
Construction access and parking
From October to November, construction access to the site will be via the existing entrances off Eurimbla Avenue. Two main access gates are to be established on Botany Street. When these are ready, construction access to the site will be via these new gates on Botany Street.
Construction traffic is limited to outside peak hours with the following hours for construction vehicles: 6.00am to 7.30am and 10.00am to 3.00pm.
To improve traffic flow, the eastern lane of parking on Botany Street between High Street and Magill Street will be removed and converted to a construction working zone. The bus stop on Botany Street will not change.
Access through UNSW Gate 11 on Botany Street and to the Botany Street car park will be maintained.
Dust
Managing dust is a key focus for the Randwick Campus Redevelopment. Mitigation measures include: air quality monitoring, sealed site hoarding and dust suppression activities.
Noise and vibration
Demolition work will be predominantly carried out during the day and behind the site hoarding. Mitigation measures include: providing respite periods during high noise activities (where possible) and noise and vibration monitoring.
Hazardous materials
Preliminary site investigations indicate some hazardous materials (such as asbestos containing material, lead paint and contaminated fill) exist in buildings and upper ground fill which is consistent with urban areas developed in this era.
All hazardous material identified will be removed by licenced contractors in accordance with legislative requirements and associated industry codes of practice.
